Give me one hundred acres of south facing river slope, the best land South Western Ontario has to offer; an ample water supply to irrigate with ; surround each field with deciduous bush and provide all the equipment and people to run the garden and I am in my element.
A day does not pass when I do not look over the farm and reflect on how lucky I am. Small time farming, particularly organic farming is a perilous vocation in SW Ontario and I am one of the fortunate ones. We have made it work.
I chose this life 18 years ago after quitting our urban jobs and moving to the farm. It wasn’t a tough decision. I was 33 and my hair had begun to thin. Working for a large telecommunication company wasn’t all it was cracked up to be ; In fact working 90 hours a week in the dirt. rain or shine looked a whole lot better. And you know what? It is!
